Does WhatsApp tell someone when you read their message?

Short answer: yes, by default — but with more exceptions than most people realise, and the setting that turns it off cuts both ways.

What the ticks mean

Indicator	Meaning
✓ One grey tick	Sent — it reached WhatsApp's servers
✓✓ Two grey ticks	Delivered — it reached their device. Says nothing about whether a human saw it
✓✓ Two blue ticks	Read — the chat was actually opened

The gap between two grey and two blue is where most misreading happens. Delivered means a phone received it. The phone may be face-down on a table in another room.

Turning read receipts off

WhatsApp lets you disable read receipts in privacy settings. Your contacts then stop seeing blue ticks from you.

It is reciprocal. Turn off read receipts and you stop seeing everyone else's too. There is no way to hide yours while still seeing theirs — that is deliberate on WhatsApp's part.

Two places where turning it off does not help

Group chats. Read receipts in groups cannot be disabled. Any group member can open a message's info screen and see exactly who has read it and when. The privacy setting has no effect there at all.

Voice messages. The blue microphone icon that appears once a voice note has been played is shown independently of the read receipts setting. Someone who has turned off blue ticks will still show as having listened.

Reading without marking as read

There are a few well-known ways, all with trade-offs:

The notification. Reading the preview in the notification shade or on a lock screen does not open the chat, so nothing turns blue. Works fine for short messages; useless for long ones.
Long-press the chat in the list. On many devices a preview appears without opening the conversation.
Airplane mode. Go offline, open and read, close the app fully, then reconnect. This is fragile — if the app syncs before you have properly closed it, the receipt goes out anyway.
Turn read receipts off entirely. The only reliable method, at the cost of losing everyone else's.

What none of this settles

Blue ticks tell you a chat was opened. They do not tell you the message was read carefully, understood, or that a reply is being composed. Someone can open a chat to clear a notification badge and absorb nothing.

A read receipt is a fact about an app. It is not a fact about a person.
